Alright, let’s gab about this cold rolled steel coil stuff, the price and all that. You know, the kinda thing them factory fellas use. I ain’t no expert, but I hear things, ya know? Folks talk.
So, this cold rolled steel, it’s like that hot rolled stuff, but they do more to it. They let it cool down all the way, like room temperature, you know, like when you leave your soup on the counter too long. Then they push it through these rollers, squish it real good, or they heat it up and cool it down again, that’s what they call “annealing” I think. Sounds fancy, but it just means more work, and more work means more money, see?

That’s why cold rolled steel costs more than the hot rolled kind. They say it’s stronger too, maybe 20% stronger, whatever that means. And they can make it smoother, like them fancy cars, all shiny and whatnot. Hot rolled is kinda rough, like my old cast iron pan. Cold rolled is like… well, like a new frying pan, all slick and smooth.
- More work to make it
- Stronger than hot rolled steel
- Smoother finish
Now, the price, that’s the tricky part. It goes up and down like a seesaw. One day it’s this much, the next day it’s somethin’ else. I heard some fella sayin’ hot rolled was going for somethin’ like $676 a ton back in November. And cold rolled? Well, that’s always more, maybe $240 a ton more they say. That’s a lot of money if you ask me.
But don’t go quotin’ me on that, prices change, you know? Like the weather. One day it’s sunny, the next it’s rainin’. Same with this steel, I reckon.
Lots of folks want to know the price, these big companies and all. They gotta figure out how much it’ll cost ’em to build stuff, like cars and buildings and whatnot. There’s these places that keep track of the prices, they got all sorts of charts and graphs. They even try to guess what the price will be in the future, like them fortune tellers at the county fair, only with numbers instead of tea leaves.
They call it “market analysis” and “forecasts.” Sounds important, huh? They look at how much steel folks are buyin’, how much they’re makin’, and all that. They even look at how much it costs to ship it around. It’s a whole big thing, more complicated than plantin’ corn, I tell ya.
So, where do you find these prices? Well, there’s these companies, they do nothin’ but track this stuff. They got websites and reports and all that. You can probably find ’em on that internet thingy, the one my grandson’s always yappin’ about. They got prices, news, the whole shebang.

But remember, prices change. What’s true today might not be true tomorrow. So, if you need to know the real price, you gotta go ask them steel folks directly, the ones sellin’ it. Don’t listen to some old woman like me, go straight to the source, that’s what I always say.
And another thing, they talk about “sizes” and “finishes.” Like, how thick it is, and how smooth. That all changes the price too, see? The thinner it is, and the smoother it is, the more it’ll cost ya, I figure. Just like them fancy bedsheets, the higher the thread count, the more they cost, right?
So, yeah, cold rolled steel coil price, it’s a whole complicated mess. But that’s the gist of it, as best as I can tell ya. It’s more expensive than hot rolled steel cause they do more work to it, make it stronger and smoother. The price goes up and down, and you gotta check with the folks sellin’ it to get the real deal. That’s all there is to it, plain and simple.
