I seen ’em at the factory when I went to visit my niece Betty, she works there, bless her heart.

These machines, they make it straight, flat as a pancake, ready to be used for whatever they need it for. Betty told me it was called “leveling”, she’s a smart one, that Betty. I told her, “You got more brains in your little finger than I got in my whole head!” She just laughed.
Then, after they do all that cutting and flattening, sometimes they gotta roll it back up again. That’s the “recoiling” part, Betty says. I guess it’s like winding up a garden hose, only bigger, way bigger, and heavier too. They gotta use big machines for that, can’t do it by hand, no sir.

My hands would be achin’ somethin’ fierce. But now, with these machines, they can do it faster and better. It’s a good thing, I reckon, makes things easier for folks like Betty. She works hard, that girl does.
I tell you what, these machines are loud, real loud. When I was visitin’ Betty at the factory, I had to cover my ears. Sounded like a thunderstorm inside. But Betty, she’s used to it. She just hollers over the noise. Said it’s like that all day long.
And they’re big too, these machines. Some of ‘em are as big as a house, no kidding. And they got all sorts of buttons and levers and dials. Looks complicated to me, but Betty knows what to do. She’s been workin’ there for a few years now. She says it ain’t easy work, but it pays the bills.

They take that big roll of metal and in just a few minutes, it’s all cut up and flattened and ready to go. It would take a whole bunch of people a whole lot longer to do it by hand. That’s for sure.
